MULTICOLOR WALL FINISH

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.3 SUBMITTALS:

    K.   Submit under provision of Section (01300) (01340).

     L.   Samples: Submit two 3 x 5" samples of each specified color

     M.   Product Data: Submit manufacturer’s product data and instructions for mixing, application and curing.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE:

     A.   Mock-ups

1.   Provide mock-up(s) under Section (01400)(01405).

2.   Apply mock-up of at least 100 square feet of each specified color as directed by architect.

3.   Upon approval by architect, mock-up(s) to serve as standard(s) for the project.

4.   Mock-up(s) may remain as part of the finishedproject.project.

     B.   Applicator

1.   Applicator shall provide painters utilized for work in this section that have been trained on the application of Multispec multicolor coatings.

2.   Applicator shall use the proper equipment required by themulticolor manufacturer for work in this section.

1.5 PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING:

B.   Deliver materials to site under provisions ofSection (01600) (01610).

C.   Deliver materials in sealed, unopened containers with manufacturer’slabel intact.

D.   Ship and store materials in a protected area at temperatures between 50ºand 100ºF.

E.   Keep containers closed during storage. Remove empty containers and rags containing solvent or paint on  a daily basis. Provide fire extinguisher in storage area.

1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS:

A.   Apply coatings only under the following conditions:

1.   Air and substrate temperatures are between 60ºF and 100ºF.

2.   Prevent wide variation of temperature which may result in condensation of freshly coated substrates.

3.   Substrate temperature must be above dew point and dry to the touch.

4.   Areas broom clean, free of excessive dust.

5.   Provide adequate illumination of substrates to be coated.

6.   Provide adequate ventilation and fresh air during application of coatings.

7.   Avoid application during periods of high humidity.

1.7 SURFACE PREPARATION:

B.   Verify that substrates are ready to receive work of this section and are in accordance with coating manufacturer’s requirements.

C.   Beginning of application means acceptance of substrates.

D.   Remove items which are not to be coated from substrates. Protect items reinstalled upon completion of coatings application.

E.   Patch and/or repair substrates as specified in applicable specifications sections. Remove dirt, grease oil, loose materials, contamination, temporary protective coatings and other foreign materials. Sand, scrape, Spackle, caulk and putty surfaces to produce smooth and uniform substrates. Touch up primed or painted substrates with specified base coat and/or specified finish.

F.   Mask adjacent substrates to prevent overspray. Protect floors and other surfaces.

G.   Concrete: Remove high spots, fill holes and clean surfaces as specified in Section (03200). Allow minimum of 28 days cure before application of coatings.

H.   Masonry: Tool joints and clean surfaces as specified in Section (04200). Rinse off cleaning solutions and allow substrate to dry. Allow minimum 28 days for mortar to cure before application of coatings.

I.   Wood: Sand smooth as specified in Section (06200) (06400). Clean knots and sap spots with mineral spirits. When dry, seal knots and sap spots with shellac.

J.   Plaster: Allow full cure before application of coatings.

K.   Gypsum Wallboard: Apply joint tape and compound to joints, fastener heads and surface imperfections as specified in Section (09250). Sand smooth

L.   and flush with adjacent substrates. Ferrous Metals: Remove millscale and rust. Sand or wire brush rusted or damaged areas to bright metal. Remove grease and other foreign materials. Touch-up damaged areas with specified base coat.

M.   Non-Ferrous Metal: Remove grease and other foreign materials.

N.   Vinyl Wallcovering: Reglue any loose seams or other areas. Replace or patch any areas from which vinyl is missing, contact Multicolor Specialties, Inc. prior to application for specific test requirements.

O.   Other Substrates: Contact Multicolor Specialties, Inc. or your local distributor for recommendations.

1.8 MAINTENANCE MATERIALS:

P.   Provide (one) (five) gallons of each color used on project in sealed, labeled containers.

1.9 APPLICATION:

Q.   Apply coatings in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

R.   Primer/Basecoats: Apply the number of coats necessary to produce a uniform substrate appearance. Apply according to manufacturer’s recommendations.

S.   Sand basecoat as necessary. Remove sanding dust.

T.   Multicolor Finish:

1.   Multispec Fine Fleck is specifically designed for application with labor saving airless spray equipment used by most professional painting contractors. It can also be applied with conventional airspray and High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP spray units).

2.   Multispec 86 (MS 86) is designed to be applied with conventional air spray equipment, using a dual-regulated ASME pressure pot and a conventional airspray gun with an internal mix aircap, using a two-step procedure (Background Coat and Pattern Coat). Background Coat: Purpose is to achieve uniform, 100% full coat coverage. This is accomplished by atomizing (shearing the color flecks during the spray process, regulating less air pressure than material pressure. Adjust air pressure to match the size of fleck specified.

3.   Multispec WaterColors (MS99) is designed to be applied with specific HVLP and conventional dual-regulated air spray equipment. Do not use airless spray equipment.

E.   Clear Coat

1.   MCT: Designed for interior application with spray equipment: airless, conventional (external mix aircap), or High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP).).

F.   Please see Multicolor Specialties, Inc. application guideline manual for more detailed equipment recommendations, or contact your equipment supplier.

G.   Final finish may vary from standard due to variations in paint equipment, pressures and technique. Always evaluate color pattern and paint delivery rate on mock-up test area while using specific batch of paint with equipment selected for job and be certain that mock-up meets with approval of specifier prior to beginning job.

  

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURERS:

A.   Products of Multicolor Specialties, Inc., 1200 Storbeck Drive, Waupun, WI, 53963, 800/536-5456 or 708/656-5586, fax 708/656-5055 are listed as a standard.

B.   Substitutions: Under provisions of Section (01600)(01630):

1.   Submit proposed substitution to architect not less than 10 days before bid date. Acceptance will be by addendum.

2.   Submit product data, test reports, application instructions, colors and other request materials.

2.2 MATERIALS:

C.   Primers/Basecoats:

1.   Concrete and Masonry: Vinyl Acrylic Block Filler and/or PVA Sealer.

2.   Wood: Alkyd Enamel Undercoater.

3.   Plaster: (New) Alkali a - Resistant Primer (Cured) Alkyd Enamel Undercoat.

4.   Gypsum Wallboard: Acrylic Drywall Sealer.

5.   Metals: Appropriate metal primer for substrate, (must be pinhole free).

6.   Other Substrates: Contact Multicolor Specialties, Inc. or our local distributor for basecoat recommendations.

7.   Use only top quality primer/basecoats for the appropriate substrate as recommended by Multicolor Specialties, Inc., or our local distributor.

B.   Multicolor Finish:

1.   Multicolor Specialties, Inc. finish (Fine Fleck, MS86, MS98 or MS99) as specified by architect.

2.   Colors: As selected and approved by architect.

 

C.   Clear Topcoat (only as indicated on schedule):

3.   MCT (Low Sheen or Gloss) waterborne acrylic polyurethane.

2.3 PRODUCT REQUIREMENTS:

A.   Multispec Fine Fleck:

1.   An emulsion of solvent based paint droplets suspended in water. Formulated with vinyltoluene-acrylate solubilized in aliphatic hydrocarbons.

2.   Finish: Flat finish with slight physical texture.

3.   Gloss: 10 gloss units with 60º glossmeter (ASTM D-523).

4.   Coverage: 150 square feet per gallon for full coat coverage. Coverage varies depending on surface texture and film thickness.

5.   Shelf Life: Paint may degrade under temperature extremes or due to excessive agitation. Manufacturer recommends use within twelve (12) months from date of manufacture.

6.   Dry Time: To touch, 2 to 4 hours; to use, 24 hours; cure, 5 to 7 days. Drying time will vary according to temperature, humidity, film thickness and type of surface.

7.   Fire Rating: Class A Fire Rating. Flame Spread 5. Smoke density 0. Tested by independent laboratory in accordance with test method (ASTM E-84-89a).

8.   Flashpoint: 205º Fahrenheit. Tagiabue Closed Cup (TCC) Test (D-56).

9.   Kauri-Butanol Value: For the isolated solvent, does not exceed 40 (FED-STD-141B, Method 4352 for solvent isolation; ASTM D-1133 for K.B. Test).

10. Flexibility: No cracking or checking when bent around 1/8" mandrel (ASTM D-1737).

11. Self-Lifting: Excellent intercoat adhesion. No evidence of lifting or blistering when recoated after eight hours (FED-STD 141B, Method 6142. Method 6252).

12. Washability: Reflectance recovery percentage 91%; (ASTM D-3450).

13. Scrub Resistance: 1460 cycles (ASTM D-2486). Over 30,000 cycles to failure for paint base (FED-STD 141B, Method 6142).

14. Stain Resistance and Household Chemical Resistance: No stains from mild acids, chemicals, oils or food (ASTM D-1308). ASTM standardized scoring system 0-10. A score of 10 was achieved. Performance (perfect), effect (none).

15. Mildew, Fungus Resistance and Bacterial Inhibition: Total absence of mildew and fungal growth, no surface bacterial growth (FED-STD-141 B, Method 6271).

16. V.O.C. Content: 540 grams/liter. Non-photochemically reactive. Odor: Mineral spirits odor while spraying and drying.

B.   Multispec 86 Architectural Spray Finish (MS86)

1.   An emulsion of solvent based paint droplets suspended in water. Formulated with vinyltoluene-acrylate solubilized in aliphatic hydrocarbons.

2.   Finish: Textured depending on specification. The larger the fleck size, the heavier the physical texture.

3.   Gloss: 10 gloss units with 60º glossmeter (ASTM D-523).

4.   Coverage: 125-175 square feet per gallon for full coat coverage. Coverage varies depending on surface texture, film thickness and fleck size. The larger the fleck, the less coverage.

5.   Shelf Life: Paint may degrade under temperature extremes or due to excessive agitation or vibration. Manufacturer recommends use within 6 months from date of manufacture.

6.   Drying Time: To touch, 2 to 4 hours; to use, 24 hours; full cure, 5 to 7 days. Drying time will vary according to temperature, humidity and film thickness.

7.   Fire Rating: Class A rating. Flame spread 5. Smoke density 0. Tested by independent laboratory in accordance with test method (ASTM E-84-89a).

8.   Flashpoint: 205 Fahrenheit. Tagliabue Closed Cup (TCC) Test (ASTM D-56).

C.   Duraspec/ Exterior Multicolor (MS98)

1.   An emulsion of solvent based paint droplets suspended in a water phase.

2.   Finish: Flat finish with slight physical texture. The larger the fleck size, the heavier the physical texture.

3.   Gloss: 10 gloss units with 60º glossmeter (ASTM D-523).

4.   Coverage: Approximately 250 to 300 square feet per gallon at 50% coverage over a smooth properly prepared surface. Spread rate will depend on the percent of surface covered.

5.   Shelf Life: May degrade under temperature extremes and excessive agitation or vibration. Manufacturer recommends use within one year from date of manufacture.

6.   Dry Time: To touch 2 to 4 hours. To use 24 hours, full cure 5 to 7 days. Dry time will vary depending on temperature, humidity, film thickness and type of surface.

7.   Fire Rating: Class A rating.

8.   Flash Point: 205º Fahrenheit. Tagliabue Closed Cup (TCC) Test (ASTM D-56).

9.   Water Vapor Transmission: Full coat coverage WVP (Perms) 15.9 (ASTM D-1653).

10. Flexibility: No cracking or checking when bent around 1/8" mandrell (FED STD-141B, Method 6221).

11. Self Lifting: Excellent intercoat adhesion (FED STD-141B Method 6252).

12. Washability: Reflectance recovery 88% (ASTM D-3450).

13. Scrub Resistance: 1885 cycles (ASTM D-2486).

14. Mildew, Fungal Resistance and Bacterial Inhibition: Total absence of mildew and fungal growth, no surface bacterial growth (FED STD-141B, Method 6271).

15. Natural Weathering: 5 years, 45º southern exposure, Miami, FL, over properly treated concrete and primers. Excellent results with almost no change in appearance. Results were based on full coat coverage and may vary based on substrate variations, preparations and choice of primer. When used as a spatter coat, performance will depend on the topcoat system used.

16. Accelerated Weathering: QUV A&B 5000 hours exposure over primed SMC test placques. Excellent color retention and film integrity with slight chalking.

17. V.O.C./V.O.S. Content: 540 grams. liter, 4.5 lbs./gal. Non-photochemically reactive.

18. Odor: Mineral spirits odor while spraying and drying.

D.   Multispec WaterColors (MS99)

1.   Waterborne paint droplets suspended in an immiscible water phase.

2.   Finish: Smooth finish with very slight physical texture.

3.   Gloss: 10 gloss units with 60º glossmeter (ASTM D-523).

4.   Coverage: 150 to 175 square feet per gallon for full coat coverage. Coverage varies depending on surface, texture and film thickness, and pattern size. The larger the fleck size, the less coverage.

5.   Shelf Life: May degrade under temperature extremes and excessive agitation. Manufacturer recommends use within one year from date of manufacture. Shelf life may be less on specialty colors and metallics.

6.   Dry Time: Air dry 70ºF. at 50% humidity. To touch 1-2 hours. To use 24 hours, full cure several days. Dry time will vary depending on temperature, humidity, film thickness and type of surface.

7.   Fire Rating: Class A rating (ASTM E-84).

8.   Flash Point: Not applicable. Nonflammable.

9.   Water Vapor Transmission: Full coat coverage WVP (Perms) 2.79 (ASTM D-1653)

10. Shipping Class: Not regulated waterbase. Must be protected from freezing.

11. Flexibility: Excellent. No cracking of film over 1/8", mandrel (ASTM D-1737).

12. Film Hardness: HB-H pencil hardness (ASTM D-3362).

13. Self Lifting: Excellent intercoat adhesion (FED STD-141B method 6252).

14. Stain Resistance: No stains from mild acids, chemicals, oils or foods (ASTM D-1308).

15. Abrasion Resistance: Taber abrasion 153.9 mgms. Loss/1000 cycles. CS-10 Wheel 1000 grm. Weight (ASTM D 4060).

16. Washability: Reflectance recovery 95.5% (ASTM D-3450).

17. Scrub Resistance: 2,350 cycles (ASTM D-2486).

18. Fungal Resistance: No growth (ASTM D-3273).

19. Bacterial Resistance: No growth (ASTM++ D-3456).

20. V.O.C./V.O.S. Content: Maximum 205 gr/liter, 1.7 lbs. per gal. Non-photo chemically reactive. Slight odor while spraying and drying.

LIMITED WARRANTY:
Under limited warranty, Multicolor Specialties, Inc. guarantees MULTISPEC products against defects in materials and workmanship. Due to the many variables in a multicolor formulation, it is difficult to achieve good batch to batch uniformity. Multicolor Specialties, Inc. reserves the right to approve batches on the basis of an acceptable commercial match. It is important for customers to purchase adequate quantities of multicolor paint from a given batch for a given job, as there may be slight differences in subsequent batches.

 Since the use of this product is beyond the control of Multicolor Specialties, Inc. liability of Multicolor Specialties, Inc. shall be limited to replacement of product. Multicolor Specialties, Inc. shall in no event be liable for consequential damages.
